There are a few different liposuction techniques that cosmetic surgeons can perform. While all of these techniques remove fat cells and help sculpt the body, the methods for doing so can vary, affecting your recovery and your final results.
- Tumescent: During tumescent liposuction, a special solution is injected into the target area to help loosen fat cells in order to facilitate their removal.
- Laser-Assist Liposuction: Rather than a liquid solution, laser-assisted liposuction utilizes laser energy to break up fat cells.
- Ultrasonic Liposuction (VASER®): This type of lipo uses ultrasound waves to liquefy fat for easier withdrawal.
While the ultimate goal of liposuction, to remove fat cells using the cannula, is the same, the mechanism used for getting there varies slightly.
Every surgeon has their preference when it comes to liposuction; I use VASER® LipoSelection® for all patients at my San Diego practice. I find that the side effects that are more prevalent in traditional (tumescent) liposuction are minimized when using VASER®. There’s less bruising after the procedure, and patients feel more comfortable during recovery. I also prefer the results I’m able to get with VASER® as compared to other techniques.
This is not to say that any one method of liposuction is better than any other. In fact, I personally feel that the results of your lipo come down to one major component, regardless of technique: the skill and expertise of your surgeon. The right surgeon will get you the results you’re looking for, no matter which tool they use to achieve that goal.
