Do Wrinkle Creams Really Work?

I see a lot of patients at my San Diego practice who come in frustrated that their latest anti-wrinkle cream doesn’t seem to be working. Does this mean wrinkle creams are a gimmick? Not exactly. Although it can be a challenge to get rid of telltale signs of aging after they’ve already left their mark on your face, there are plenty of proactive approaches you can take at home that will help your skin stay younger looking for longer, and delay the need for plastic surgery.

Establish a Routine

The first step in keeping wrinkles off your face is to give your skin all the nutrients it needs to stay supple and firm. This means drinking plenty of water, eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies, and avoiding junk food. Supplements such as anti-oxidants and Omega-3s can also help keep skin healthy and glowing.

In addition to nourishing your skin from the inside, you can also use night creams and anti-wrinkle treatments to make sure your skin stays moisturized. During the day, be sure to wear a daily SPF sunscreen; sun damage is one of the fastest aging accelerators, especially here in sunny La Jolla. Although nothing can stop the aging process in its tracks, taking these preventative measures can help delay a trip to your cosmetic surgeon for longer.

Seeking Treatment

While a proactive approach is ideal, at some point you may decide to move forward with cosmetic surgery. Whether choosing surgical or nonsurgical facial rejuvenation, finding the right surgeon for an initial consultation to evaluate your individual needs is key. From there, you can decide your treatment strategy, which may or may not continue including that anti-wrinkle cream.
