As a cosmetic surgeon in the La Jolla area, I often advise my patients that maintaining realistic expectations is one of the keys to a successful outcome. This is especially true for subtle procedures like eyelid surgery. While plastic surgery can rejuvenate the eye area, even better results are often achieved by combining the surgery with additional procedures.
Fighting Facial Aging
The eye area is one of the first to show signs of aging, typically in early crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes. Another early sign often appears in the vertical furrows between the brows above the bridge of the nose, and the horizontal lines that begin to cross the forehead.
Some of the signs of aging around the eyes, like lowered brows and frown lines, are actually caused by the forehead muscles, and won’t be resolved through an eyelid lift. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can lift drooping eyelids and get rid of bags under the eye, but won’t do a thing for your forehead wrinkles. A brow lift, injectable fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are all possible treatment options that can leave your entire upper face looking years younger when combined with eyelid surgery.
A Cosmetic Approach
Other nonsurgical treatments can also enhance the results of your eyelift. For example, if you have age spots or other signs of sun damage, or fine wrinkles elsewhere on your face, an all-over facial treatment like microdermabrasion, laser resurfacing or chemical peels can return a healthy, youthful glow to your reflection.
The first step in any plastic surgery treatment plan is to find the right cosmetic surgeon. Then, you can work together to establish your appearance goals and decide which combination of procedures will help get you there.
